RE:40 Cumberland St. The lodge 49 referred to was an Orange Lodge. The building along with the rest of the street on that side up to and i/c some of Eglinton St belonged to the railways board. These properties were let to railway employees My dad being a guard at Polmadie and later Central station, we lived in the flat above the lodge from 1957 to1968.Our flat being the same size as the lodge was at one time Sadie McKerrachers School of Dancing, not sure of the dates though. Thanks a million for posting these photos of the old place and the surrounding area, made my day.

Thanks for the input, PETEWALK, and for the info about Lodge 49. Masonic or L.O.L., had to be one or the other.

Interesting too about the Dance School - have you seen this thread http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/Dancing...ephone_Gorbals_233_about3823.html ?

Happy you enjoyed the photos.

I have checked, Masonic lodge number 49, Ancient is based in Dundee
I have spoken to a friend who lived in Gorbals and he assured me, there was an Orange lodge and a Masonic lodge in Gorbals, I am sure he said both were in Cumberland st but I can check with him tomorrow
I still have no idea what the name and number of the Masonic Lodge was

Hi Sputnick, I spoke to my friend today and he will check it out

I can see a lodge, Masonic or Orange Order, moving to other parts of Glasgow but cant see any moving to Dundee

My friend also mentioned he had his first pint of Guiness in the Buffs lodge in Abbotsford Place

There's a very poor one right at the edge of a shot in my 'Last Days . .' thread. To save you hunting for it, it's here too -

Now part of the car park for the court .... well the "floral" planters around the outside. While we are on the subject - why is that the only corner not to replicate the original diamond of the old Gorbals Cross ??
