Thats the way windows were washed or painted in those days, done it myself in our first house we had when we got married
My wife was on the inside holding my legs
I have often thought that the expression"yer bums oot the windae " came from washing windows this way

Just think of all that needless suffering that could have been alleviated if she had just let yi go
Sash windows were a pain in the arse. It was a crowd puller though when they were getting washed in the manner you say Norrie and the counter-weight rope snapped.

The squeelin could alert weans from the furthest away drives as we all knew the fire brigade was coming and some mug had got broken legs in the Tenement Guillotine.
