St George's Rd, west side south of Glenfarg St, the New Metropole Theatre, which Jimmy Logan bought in 1964 and tried heroically to make viable at a time when television was becoming the predominant source of entertainment. A 10 month run of ’Hair’ in 1970 was highly profitable, but little else was, and Mr Logan had lost a great deal of his own money before the theatre closed in 1972. North Woodside Rd at Maryhill Rd, from St Clair St. The nearer tenement block is still there, Wilson’s now the Woodside Inn, but the Tramcar Vaults building is now a Taggart‘s showroom. The model tramcar which was the pub sign is in the People’s Palace. March 1974

St Joseph's Rectory and Church, North Woodside Rd, demolished some time in the 1980s. St Joseph’s was formerly administered by the Jesuits, and Gerard Manley Hopkins, who was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1877, served here as a relief temporary curate for two months in the autumn of 1881. It was not a happy time, and in a letter he described Glasgow as a ‘wretched place’ and ‘repulsive to live in’. However, as he is not known to have visited Scotland again, this was presumably when he visited Inversnaid and wrote (for it is certainly ‘drawn from life’) the well-known poem of that name, incomparably the finest description of a highland burn in spate. Maryhill Rd, somewhere south of Bilsland Dr. There’s a Burmah garage on the left (3 star 69p, and that would have been per gallon, = 18p per litre), possibly on the site of the current Esso place. May 1975

Bilsland Dr at Maryhill Rd, from the aqueduct. Bilsland Dr is much the same, but the tenements in Maryhill Rd were cleared to open up a new entry to Queen Margaret Dr. October 1975
