Moderator Edit

Post all instances of Glasgow buildings "mysteriously catching fire" in this thread, folks.

Looks like a bit of a conflagration going off to the South East (of me anyway - around the Kingsway area).

Anyone have the skinny on what's happening?

30 evacuated as tyre fire darkens city sky (© Evening Times)

Around 30 people have been evacuated from their homes after a major fire broke
out at a tyre storage centre.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in the Ibrox area of the city shortly
before 8am. Several fire crews were sent to Fairley Street where they faced
massive plumes of choking black smoke which billowed across the south of
the city.

The blaze led to major travel chaos for drivers as several roads were closed. Ibrox
Subway station has been closed as a precaution. Commuters could see the
smoke from the nearby M8 but also as far away as Clydebank on the other side
of the river. Glasgow Airport was also on alert as the wind was blowing the
smoke in its direction.

A spokesman for BAA, which runs the airport, said: “Our duty manager was
made aware of the situation, but we have been told that by the time any smoke
reaches us, there will be very little. There is no adverse affect on flights this
morning.”

A temporary shelter was set up for evacuated residents at Ibrox Library and
Learning Centre while other people were being told to stay indoors. A police
spokeswoman said: “Police received a report of a fire at a number of lock-ups
in Fairley Street near to the junction of Carmichael Street. Smoke from the
fire is currently blowing in a south-westerly direction and as a precaution, local
residents are being advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.”

Investigations are expected to be carried out to find out how the blaze started
and whether or not it was deliberate. The fire is believed to be centred on a
lock-up used as a vehicle repair workshop, which deals in scrap and old tyres.

Seven fire engines and more than 20 firefighters are attending the blaze.

Ibrox Subway was NOT closed... the police tape was across the entrance but it was still open and fully operational. Typical reporting where they haven't tried confirm any facts
