There was an old Tower that sat behind Montford house on the Darnley/Parkhouse rd,maybe thats what you remember. It was knocked down in the 70's i think
Hi John
Yes this could well be it. Though it would have been on the crest of the hill walking along the path I mentioned,
I don't think easily visible from the road, but I'm not sure on that.
As a kid when we used to walk along Parkhouse to the park, always stopping at the boundary sign,
legs spread one foot in Glasgow one foot in Renfrewshire.
This was the best place to get into the grounds of Montford.
There was an old wall with castle like turrets and a handy railing missing that you could squeeze through.
From there you could follow the woods right round to Dubs rd
I don't know anything about Nitshill or its surrounding areas but this thread is epic.
Well done guys.
Hi LL
Glad you like it.
Yeah i could talk S**te for Scotland, but there are some good wee snippets in there too.
This thread has opened up a world of memories for me and i have never enjoyed a forum as much as this one.
I have learned a lot about an area i thought i knew well.
Thanks go to Mr Glass for starting this one & letting us blether away about the good old days.
I was going to say that there are some turrets on both sides of Parkhouse Road. There sar also some in the garden of Parkhouse House.
There is a place called Pollok Castle at the other end of the dams.
Hi All
Here is a strange wall from Parkhouse farm.
Very overgrown in this pic. But it was a lovely wall & purley ornimental.
It went in an L from the Byre to Parkhouse rd.
I remember when it was very tidy & Mr Winkler kept his chickens in there.
Which building do you call Parkhouse house?
I think thats what we called the Red House just after the farm on the other side.
I can't place the Castle you mentioned.gimme a general area please.

HI All
Still in surrounding area?
Anyone that grew up in the Nitshill area must have looked forward to a trip out to the glen.
The Rouken Glen is still one of my fav places to visit when i get up the road.
The high dam
Not sure what this is or even why?
Fallen tree over the burn seems like its been used as a bridge.
I roughly merged an old map from the 20's with a google to show where the tower was,it also looks like there was one other across the road beside the old chapel (now the columba club i think) and the printworks on salterland was more recently a sewage works..I also drew the route of old train lines and the original aurs rd (looks like it originally ran up the flying horse/mount shimla rd)
Hi John
Clever work with the maps.
Looks like the tower to the north of the road is the one I remember.
I think the other tower is Montford hall the original building, not the flats on the road side.
We used to sneak by that as it was a scary building and who knows a mad monk might have ran out & grabbed us at any moment
I'm pretty sure the mill (?) I mentioned was just behind the old Kennomeat place. There was defiantly a weir there.
Jock the photo of the overgrown garden is the one I was referring to as Parkhouse House. The name is above the door.
Pollok Castle is near Aurs Road in that general direction. I passed it on a walk a while back. But I am not a hundred percent sure of the exact location.
The original was demolished but the new house is still called Pollok Castle.
On your other post they are great photos of Rouken Glen Park.
The park was owned by Glasgow but passed to East Renfrewshire Council following a change to the City's boundary.
It is a great park. I unfortunately have never been up there with a camera. Will need to try and get there soon there is a lot worth photographing.
