It wasn't seen as being cost effective opening up the London Road line as there wasn't felt to be any prospect of this being a well used line only to Parkhead. The line would have to go further but this would have resulted in more costs without any guarantee of a great income from the service.

Dalmarnock refurbishment seemed to be the more cost effective proposal.

Another option was to put in a station on the Airdrie line between Bellgrove and Carntyne.

The line east of Parkhead has been built on in several places, including a new
bunch of flats/offices(?) in Tollcross not too long ago. Given that this line was part
of the Clyderail proposals in the early 1970s it really should've been protected.

The Airdrie line used to have a station there, Parkhead North. They've been
talking about reopening this one for years too. It would be right behind the
Forge.

I love the the massive viaduct west of Carntyne at the forge. Shame the tracks are not still there to occupy the whole span of the viaduct.

Wasn't there any iron works down there too, close to where you're talking about? I think a lot of the old bridge supports and embankments are still visible around that weird junction at the bottom of Todd Street.

As for the ironworks, isn't the gate still there?

The earth embankments are still there, for now. The 'Switchback' line passed
on a really high set of embankments and viaducts, and most of this was still
there until the late 1980s. The line passed high over Duke Street, just before
the exisiting bridges jonno was talking about, and came to an abrupt end as
the steel bridge that carried the line above the Airdrie - Glasgow line had been
removed in the late 60s or early 70s.

The bridges at the bottom of Todd Street went in the mid-late 80s as well, after
the Haghill branch was uplifted. This branch SHOULD be protected given the Airdrie
to Bathgate line is being rebuilt, but I doubt it is...

This overhead shows what I think are the old lines radiating away quite well. One joins onto the Queen Street Low Level line just south of Duke Street station.

That shows, quite clearly, the Haghill branch. It hasn't been built on - yet. As I
said it should be preserved, then restored for use as a diversionary route from
Queen Street High Level - Edinburgh via the Cowlairs Chord, Alexandra Parade,
Airdrie and Bathgate, especially as it's a long-term goal to electrify QS HL.

I think going from QS HL, via Springburn -> Duke Street -> Airdrie -> Edinburger would make it a more interesting journey. It would also stop people from the East End having to head into QS for a train to Edinburger. Unless, that is, there's a train which goes that way already and I just don't know about it.

James, did the Switchback line cross over the Gallowgate, a little west of Celtic Park? I seem to remember the abutments of a bridge on the Gallowgate, and I reckon it would've been east  from the junction of Fielden Street/Gallowgate, but not before Celtic Park. And did the Switchback eventually join the Haghill branch?

Thanks (sorry for being a bit off-topic )

Not sure if it was the switchback but there was a line ran between janefield street and dalserf st in barrowfield it still follows the west side of the stadium it went to the bridges james seaks of on the haghill branch but was blocked by a huge wall where stamford st met janefield street at the tunnel.
It then carried on over a set of arches with a spur to what was then parkhead forge or you could go straight on till you hit haghill.
I remember being up on this huge bridge as a kid as we played on the old embankments and was amazed to find someone had dug huge holes all over it then covered them with branches.
I remember this getting took away sometime around 78-79.

P.S it crossed the gallowgate just about where the roundabout at kfc is now .... There was a bar there and it was the quick way down when the railway cops showed up lol ...

Yes, it did. The line passed close to the (old) ground, almost cutting into the footprint
of the stadium at the main stand side. When the line was removed it quickly became
a path for fans to access the main stand from the Gallowgate side, as there was
no actual path. Pic below shows how close the line was to the ground.

The line DID NOT connect to the Haghill branch - it passed high over it.

Erstwhile Celtic FC chairman Fergus “The Bunnet” McCann proposed reopening
a section of this line from Rutherglen to the south side of London Road opposite
the ground. Came to nothing, despite his vision.

Imagine how handy that would be for the 2014 Diddy Games.......
