Here's a shot of St Enoch underground station taken 22.10.1976 - looks like there is construction work going on all around

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but does anyone remember when the Bus Station at St. Enoch Square closed? And also when Argyle St/Queen St became one way and Osborne Street(at Argyle St) was sealed off?

Thanks in advance!

makes me sick to the stomach the way Glasgow corporation steamrollered Glasgow'S history. they displaced over 400,000 people without a care in the world. the way the used compulsory purchased people's property they should have been investigated and prosecuted for out and out theft.S Enoch was a masterpiece of a building. Glasgow could have been the Athens of the UK.

Absolutely right Jamesy. The Corporation made up their mind what they wanted to do and that was it. It was made easier for them because they were not in the main dealing with owners of buildings but they WERE the owners. Carol Foreman described the loss of so many buildings in her book Lost Glasgow as an orgy of self hatred which sounds about right. Glasgow had problems of overcrowding, unsanitary conditions and totally unacceptable levels of child mortality which had to be addressed but did every single building and street they demolished have to be pulled down? No way.

Sorry guys but it is incorrect to blame Glasgow City Council for the demolition of the station, as the station, hotel and all ancillary land was owned by the British Railways Board, Glasgow City Council had no say in the closure of the station or the disposal of the land.  If you read the book "Scottish Region: A History 1948-1973 (British Railways Region By Region) by A.J. Mullay the true story was the B.R. Scottish Region was totally strapped for cash and was disposing of surplus land as quickly as possible to try and balance the books.  The station closure (and the closure of Buchanan Street) was sadly the correct decision as the facilities at Central and Queen Street were quite capable of supporting the services running at that time.
