Looks like the hangers were incorrectly installed and this resulted in vastly increased stresses on them and as a result all of them have to be replaced. However the bill for the remedial works will be met by the contractors who built the bridge.
That is great news, int it ? That we (taxpayers) will not have to pay for the repair ! Any compensation getting paid tae the cooncil or even asked for ? Naw, that widnae be in the contract. ie if it disnae work ye repair and recompense for upheaval. Another balls up similar to when the streets were dug up for cable and relaid any old way and which we are now having to pay for by the way stanks etc can't cope wi rain and pavements are treacherous to walk on and have enormous puddles on them all the time, even in dry weather.
GLASGOW'S showpiece £20million Squinty Bridge could remain shut for up to six
months after a crack was found in a second cable.
Engineers ordered the immediate closure of a section of the River Clyde after
the serious fault was discovered during an emergency inspection.
The recently-built Clyde Arc has been closed to traffic for nearly two weeks
after one of its cables crashed on to the road surface.
Residents nearby described the moment when the support hit the tarmac as sounding
like a "bomb blast".
It was originally thought the crossing, which links Finnieston with Govan, would
remain shut for a few weeks but the latest discovery has put a major question mark
over all of the bridge's 14 steel ties.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said the bridge was expected to be closed
for up to six months.
He added: "In the course of an inspection a crack was found in another similar
connector on a different hanger.
"The council has requested all river traffic below the bridge be suspended."
It is thought there will be little disruption to river traffic as there is minimal
use on the affected stretch.
It's understood the crack appeared quickly but it's not clear if it's directly
linked to the first cable collapse.
The council is understood to be planning to replace the ties on the structure of
the bridge to ensure there are no further problems.

WORK will begin tomorrow on repairs to the £20million Squinty Bridge.
But contractors are so worried about the safety of the structure that initial
work will be done from a barge on the River Clyde.
Only when temporary cables are put in place will workmen be allowed back
on the bridge.
The crossing, which links Finnieston to Govan, was closed to traffic two
weeks ago after one of its supporting cables crashed on to the road. It was
found re-inforced steel rings connecting it to the top of the arch had sheered.
A detailed inspection last week found a second connecting ring on the other
side of the bridge had a slight crack.
All work stopped until it was decided how to proceed with repairs.
Robert Booth, city council executive director of land and environmental
services, said a barge would be constructed on the river today.
He said: "Our concern was there was a second crack so we could not put
stress on the bridge, but doing the work from the river means we do not
have to go on to it.
"Each cable weighs three to four tons, so when that cable fell it would have
gone through a bus like a knife through butter."
The first step will be to fit temporary hangers alongside permanent supports.
Once that is done, workmen will be able to go back on to the bridge and
begin lowering the permanent hangers one at a time.

GLASGOW'S Squinty Bridge could be closed until August.
Council bosses have now obtained a six month closure order which replaces
the original emergency road closure order which lasted for a maximum of 28 days.
The first order came into place after a hanger on the Clyde Arc, which links
Finnieston and Govan, snapped and the bridge was closed for safety reasons.
However, when it emerged work could be lengthy a six month order was issued.
A spokesman for the city council said: "The order now has a duration of six months
with an end date of August 8.
"This period of time was selected not because we had a definite date for the bridge
to re-open but to avoid the need to repeatedly renew an order if it had been
promoted for shorter periods of time."
The £20million Clyde Arc was closed last month after a four-ton cable crashed
on to the roadway when a steel ring connecting the cable to the bridge arch
snapped.

VITAL repair work at the troubled Squinty Bridge has taken a major step forward.
Work has started on a giant steel frame which is being put in place to support
the weight of the road which will allow the strut repairs to be carried out.
Cranes and barges and specialist equipment have been moved to the £20million
Clyde Arc which was closed in January after a four-ton cable crashed on to the
road after a steel ring connecting the cable to the bridge arch snapped.
Reinforced steel is being welded on to the bridge arch to take the weight of the
road over the river which will then allow engineers to replace faulty connections
which are holding huge cables in place.
The repairs are being done by civil engineering firm Edmund Nuttall which built
the Clyde crossing.
A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council today said: "Work on the steel frame
began yesterday when cranes and other equipment were moved on site."
After the initial cable crash, an inspection team later discovered a connecting
ring on the other side of the bridge had also cracked. A decision was taken to replace
every ring connected to the bridge's 14 cables.
The major faults came to light just 15 months after the bridge opened and just
weeks after it won one the country's leading engineering awards. It's expected
to remain closed until August.
