I am researching the hospital provision for sick and wounded soldiers in WW1 and their conveyance there by Rail. I have learned from a Railway source that a special platform was provided for Ambulance Trains from Southampton to serve “Gateside School Hospital”, Hamilton Road, Cambuslang. The school was completed just before or after war began in 1914 and was immediately requisitioned by the Army, and served as a hospital until 1919 when it reverted back to being a school, named at various times:

Gateside School; St. Bride’s Secondary; Trinity High; Cambuslang College; South Lanarkshire College.

Closed in 2008, it was demolished and Aldi is now built on the site.

Luckily there is a map of the railway line on this thread so I’ve borrowed it to show which  line the platform was on. Its the line from Kirkhill that used to go over Hamilton Road and past Westburn cemetery to Carmyle.

But it’s the school building I’m interested in, particularly where the pedestrian and vehicle entrances were to it from the adjacent roads, as this may confirm my opinion on where the platform was located on the Carmyle line.

Aerial photos of the line are taken from the Glasgow Central Low Level in 1967 thread, page 67, and you’ll see from these below that the Carmyle line runs on an embankment and there’s no road access up to any platform along there. There was also the Hamilton Road bridge and 3 rail bridges all within 900 yards of the junction between the Carmyle line and Kirkhill line, close to the tunnel.

The best I can manage is this
The Westburn line approaches from the left (red line) and the red box is where it meets the WCML. The blue dots indicate the location of the bridge but it is too poor quality at that part of the image to blow it up any further.

Here's a sharper image in panoramic view. CLICK link below for larger version. I must admit I like the prominent coal bing.

The Google Street View link below is Howieshill Road at Howieshill Avenue looking north towards Hamilton Road. Gateside school would have been a short distance away to the left, and the railway now at road level sits on the right. There is a track access there a short distance beyond the railway building, which may have been the access to the platform which I believe was on the first track behind the fence.

Question – was there vehicular access off Howieshill Avenue into Gateside school?
