Exploring Glasgow's secret 'ghost station'

A disused and forgotten platform beneath Glasgow Central station offers a glimpse of the past.

Guided tours of the tunnels have attracted thousands of people over the past couple of years.

But plans are afoot to try and restore part of the platform to how it looked in its heyday.

Paul Lyons of Glasgow Central Tours took BBC News on a tour of Glasgow's ghost station.

I gave permission to 'Abandoned Scotland' to use six of my pictures with a proviso that the posts include a link to this thread on UG. I also provided them with original texts to explain the pictures and my reasons for exploration of the low level line back in 1967. Hopefully the taster might encourage more interested folk to come and read our full thread here.
If anyone here sees these pictures on 'Facebook' or 'Abandoned Scotland' please be assured that the postings are legitimate. iangr

Great photos Ian - some first seen on the Abandoned Glasgow site. I recall visiting the low level platforms at Glasgow Central around the mid 1960s. One Saturday afternoon, a friend and I managed to evade a station guard and descend to the abandoned platforms and tunnels. My recollection was that some trains were still using part of the network (thus the guard / ticket collector) but that we didn't actually see any trains. A further vague recollection is of almost being caught. A very daring - not to mention dangerous - enterprise for young teenagers. I guess we were about 13 or 14 at the time. Would love to see more photos from the area immediately below Central

Trains would be running up to October 1964 so the platform guard must have been there to check tickets. There wouldn't be very many tickets to check as business on the Central low level was almost non-existent by then. According to the 'Railscot' website the last train (a DMU set) using this route left Possil station for Rutherglen completely empty except for the driver and guard. I would suggest that the ticket guard you slipped by from was bored out of his mind and not paying attention to his job. Good for you to defy protocols and get a last look. iangr
