Jet skis the star turn for 87,000 at river festival (Evening Times)

JET SKIERS went head over heels for the Glasgow River Festival this
weekend as 87,000 visitors set an event record.

The skiers' display of acrobatics was just one of the attractions centred
around the Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour, the SECC and Glasgow Science
Centre, which celebrated the revival of the Clyde A volleyball tournament
staged on an artificial beach, powerboat excursions and a pirate's
treasure hunt all added to the fun which started after Lord Provost
Councillor Bob Winter, hoisted a special flag on the HMS Middleton.

It was designed by St Fillan's primary school pupil Aidan MacIssac, who
was 12 on Saturday, and had won a contest to create the flag.

The Tall Ship Loth Lorien played its part after sailing up the Clyde to berth
at Millennium Dock before inviting visitors aboard to inspect its 34 berths,
a 50-seat saloon and the on-deck Jacuzzi.

The SV Glenlee, which first sailed in 1896 and has circumnavigated the
globe four times, was also a major attraction in the festival's fifth year.

A Radio Clyde Beach Party saw live broadcasts from the event - for which
the Evening Times is media partner - and sessions with the Scottish
Amateur Rowing Association were also popular.

My festival fun was ruined by parking fine rip-off (Evening Times)

NEARLY 40 drivers were slapped with parking fines while at Glasgow's River
Festival as confusion reigned over the rules.

Two of the drivers hit by £30 fines say parking signs in Minerva Street were
totally unclear and the city council "ruined their day".

Jay Johnson, 56, from Milngavie, went to the River Clyde event on Sunday
to take photographs. He parked his Ford Focus - he believed legally - in
Minerva Street near the SECC.

But he returned to find a £30 parking ticket, which doubles to £60 if not
paid within 14 days, and saw around eight other confused motorists in the
same position.

The council insists a sign at the street entrance warns drivers they are
entering a restricted parking zone and says park only in signed bays'.

But the 39 drivers hit by fines went much further along the street and
round a corner, where a sign reads: "Mon-Fri 8am-6pm. Resident permit
holders or pay at machine."

Because it was a Sunday and the sign indicated charges applied Monday
to Friday, the drivers believed they didn't have to pay to park.

But in fact motorists are only allowed to park in designated bays - and not
on the street at any time.
