The Botanic Gardens were originally in Sandyford on an 8 acre site to the West End of Sauchiehall Street. The Botanic Gardens were run in conjunction between Royal Botanical Institution of Glasgow (RBIG) and Glasgow University to provide teaching and supply plants. The site proved successful and the expansion led to a move to the present site at Kelvinside in 1842.

Initially the Botanic Gardens were for RBIG members and their friends and family, but later access was opened to the paying public on selective days at a cost of one penny. The recently restored Kibble Palace was moved from its original location at a private residence in Coulport on Loch Long to the site in 1873. In 1891 the Botanic Gardens were taken over by Glasgow Corporation.
