My boyfriend and I went to Glasgow Zoo at the weekend (12/10/2008). My camera battery ran out half way round so we will be returning soon armed with tripods and fully charged batteries.

If anyone has any information on the zoo, such as pictures of it when it was still open, or even better a leaflet or map from the zoo showing the layout I would really, really love to see them.
I did visit as a child but there doesn't seem to be any pictures.

I knew from searching online that the place would be in a bad state of disrepair, but for some reason i really didn't expect it to be as bad as it actually is.
I know that for many years before its closure it was renowned for the animals being kept in innapropriate conditions and not being looked after as well as possible due to severe financial difficulties, but I couldn't help feeling deeply saddened by what I saw.

The Tiger enclosure.

An animal transporting box

One of the few walkways not covered in burned tyres
Some, such as those going to the Polar Bear enclosure, are barely visible and difficult to find.

Not sure what this housed, maybe chimps?
It is joined to the 'enclosure/walled off area' in the foreground and also to one about 3 times the size to the right of the building.
This picture was taken in another area that was once an enclosure, but as with most of the Zoo all thats left is a small half demolished wall surrounding it.

Same building, different angle

Inside the building in one of the animal holds, maybe it was some sort of deer or antelope. That looks like a hay manger on the wall.

Still in the same building, rusty chair frame in the corner

Reptile house?

Inside

Monkey house

Where's all the birds?

The last picture before my battery died, the sign on the gate says "Please close the gate".

More great photos iiisecondcreep.

Like you I remember making visits to the zoo but sadly don't have any photos.

There must be some sort of leaflet out there and i am sure someone will be able to track one down

I am on a mission to find such a leaflet!

Someone on another forum kindly linked me to this
(I seem to be one of the few people not really aware of this site!)
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.glasgowzoo.co.uk
on the very earliest archive of the site there is a link to a map of the zoo but unfortunately the map itself has not been archived!
The link itself is a tiny little gif map, but its too small to enlarge (I tried).

I've not been there since 1988 and it looks more like a zoo now than it did then.
I have an enduring image of a half crazed polar bear in it's enclosure wearing a traffic cone on it's head... I kid you not!

Tragically it died of dementia a year or so later.

A couple of my own from the Zoo.

Had an unsuccessful trip back there last weekend. mainly due to wee sh*te's letting off fireworks and scaring us timid souls.

Some old signs we found before the neds appeared.
Wish I'd remember to turn them face down again before we left.

A rams horn

Some leaflets

Apparently this place has been closed to the public since '96 or '97
