A BLOCK
of flats on the site of a former Glasgow dance hall has been named the worst new building in Scotland.

The historic and much-loved Plaza Ballroom, where generations of dancers flocked during its heyday from the 1920s to 1960s, was transformed into 77 flats by Southplace Homes last year.

But the scheme in the South Side has now picked up a less than flattering carbuncle award from architecture experts.

"Oh thit, I can't find any bricks to match the ground floor !"

"Don't worry Jimmy, I've got a special deal on new bricks from my overseas contacts.  It'll be right !"

"Boss, we've run out of bricks again !"

"No worries Jimmy, I've got more overseas contacts than you can shake a stick at !"

"Geez Boss, do you really think people want to live in a Neapolitan Ice Cream Block ?"

Credit where credit is due (or, name and shame the b*stards):

Southplace Homes

Ashleigh Construction

Robert Potter and Partners

Incidentally, the developer (77), builder (76) and architect (79) can't agree on how many flats are in the development. Says a lot, eh?

Although that building is ugly I do pass this one a lot more and I hate looking at it. From the cheapo wallpaper shop to the stained cladding the whole thing is a mess. I think it could fall into the 'new' category as well.

To be honest, there are so many new builds that look just like that, including
those fugly student flats on the High Street, so I'm struggling to see why this
one has been singled out.

It is hideous, I'll give it that...

As James says, it's a tough choice with so much poo(r)-quality new builds on the go. The choice is essentially which is the shitiest sh!t in a cesspit of sh!t when your choice is jobby, keech, crap, turd or toley. Whilst that sh!t monstrosity on the the site of the Plaza is pretty sh!t, they did at least incorporate the old Plaza façade, which is not so much dressing mutton as lamb, more trying to dress road kill squirrel as organic, free range, fair trade, fillet steak from a cow that wanted to commit suicide anyway at the Dignitas clinic, but at least it didn't end up as road fill on the M74 extension. I've yet to see some new build that has been put up in the last 10-15 years that I've seen being built that isn't a steel framed, concrete, fibreboard and zinc coated box, done using the cheapest materials possible, to the minimum standards required to maximise the profit for the building company responsible. I guess I won't live to see them torn down, but I suspect the remains of the Plaza will be retained and the rest will end up as fill for some other project.

Have been walking past this building at night quite a bit (especially now the film festival is on, I'm coming past at irregular hours depending on the shows) and what strikes me is how few lights are on in the evenings. I reckon only a handful of the flats have been occupied; several have been bought and have 'to let' signs in the windows.
