When cities are bidding on these sorts of events, they keep on expounding the benefits and legacy that will be left once the games are over.

I have often wondered if any reliable research has been carried out into these claims, and how they work out in reality,

e.g. Olympic games in Athens.  I read an article sometime in the last couple of years about the "legacy" that this has left.   From memory most the game's venues are not being used but becoming increasingly derelict.  The only actual "legacy" is the debt burden!

Look at former Garden Festival sites.... just in the last 5-6 years that most of Glasgows has come in to use and about 1/3 of it is still waste land. The Liverpool site I believe is still mostly derelict

I go there now and then to visit my hubcaps. And my cousin is also the other reason...

I was tempted to ignore the negative comments but feel I have to say something before everyone starts to believe that nothing positive can come from the Commonwealth Games.

I don't think any other games, either Commonwealth or Olympic has considered the potential legacy. Over the years there are many examples of building build specifically for these games not being used beyond the period of the games.

Glasgow it should be remembered secured the games based on the fact that most of the facilities were already build and being used on a regular basis.

Why is it so hard to believe that the new buildings will not be used following the games. The plans are already in place for their use after the games have moved on. Our cyclists currently train in England so the new velodrome will be the main centre in Scotland for training as well as providing additional public facilities currently not available in Glasgow. Currently Tollcross Pool is well used and in fact there are regular complaints due to the amount of time the pool is not available to the public due to club usage. The new pool will meet a current demand that is well established.

The National Indoor Arena will be the home of the National organisation for Sport and the facilities will be able to attract more events due to the improved facilities. This will need to be carefully managed but I am sure most people will agree that Glasgow has managed to attract many more sporting events over the past 10 years and has a very good international reputation for hosting such events.

The improved facilities at Scotstoun again will help to attract more events as well as be available as before.

Mistakes have been made in the past by not making the most of the opportunities that can come from hosting such events but Glasgow isn't the only place not to take advantage. Hopefully when considering the facts above it may change some peoples minds about the positive side to hosting the Commonwealth Games.

Alex

I wasn't actually being negative.  I genuinely would like to know what the differences in claims about legacies, and the actual legacies have been.

You are quite right that in many cases the facilities have been built specifically for the games without any thought about what comes afterwards.

It will be interesting to see down the line what becomes of the facilities being built for the 2012 Olympics.

Correct me if I'm getting the wrong end of the stick but aren't the games all about leaving a legacy in the host city?
