Johnnie Ionta barbers shop on the Gallowgate near the corner of Soho st.
I remember he used to put a board across the arms of the chair and tell me to climb up so he could cut my hair.The shop was alway packed with punters. I think he had three brothers working in the same shop. _________________ Keep yer bunnet oon
Yer i had the old red board too .... All you could smell in the shop was capstan and hair oil....
His brother worked there when i was a lad Tommy ... Used to see them walking home with his wee black leather bag up Whitehill St at night.

Makes for such happy reading but saddened bythe news of their passing.
It comes to us all i suppose but that shop was an anchor point for many an eastender.

Yes I agree with that, but it's funny to think a simple everyday thing like a barbers shop can mean so much to a lot of people and that say's a lot about the Ionta brothers. _________________ Keep yer bunnet oon
Everyone knew wee Johnny, he was some character, a big part of the Gallowgate , I remember being told of his wife being sent over from Italy, and supposedly they d never met before the meeting..
