Just crossed Australia from east to west (Newcastle to Perth) and back again with a mate !  Total trip nearly 10,000km, with 6,500km done in my little car, a 2006 Hyundai Accent GLS with a 1.6L motor.

Did the road over to Perth in six days, stopping exactly where we wanted to and doing more than 1,000 kms on each of the first three days !  Had a more sedate trip around the South-western part of Australia into Perth before loading the car on the Indian Pacific Train back to Adelaide.  Then travelled back from Adelaide to Newcastle by road.

This is at the start of the Nullarbor Plain, and the road is fairly straight, including one particular part which is 146km (around 96 miles) long.

It was a totally amazing trip !

There was a tv programme years back about the train that crosses the Nullarbor Plain.  It looked like a fascinating place!

It must have been a great trip

hillmanimp,

That's the train (The Indian Pacific) we travelled back to Adelaide on.  Sadly we were too late in booking to get it all the way back to Sydney (a four day trip).

The rail line across the Nullarbor is generally about 100 to 150 km from the coast as opposed to the road which is rarely 50km from the coast, so the scenery, or lack of, can be totally different.

That 146km straight on the road is totally overshadowed, though, by a 450km plus straight on the railway line.

This wee pic is taken at a place called Cook, in the middle of the Nullarbor.

It was 44 degrees Celsius and the wind was blowing real hot.

Cook has a population of five;  Gran, Grandad, Mum, Dad and daughter.  It used to be much bigger !

It was a pleasure to get back onto the air-conditioned train and into the Lounge Car for a refreshing bevvy !

Cheers, Tombro

Fjord

Great set of photos   You obviously had a clearer day than I did when you went up the Hancock tower.  There was a lot of haze when I was there.

I was in Chicago for the wedding of a friend of mine.  The mother of the bride lived in one of the skyscrapers fairly close to the sandy headland.  I think it might have the dark brown one.

The family had a barbeque on that headland, but the ship wasn't there then.

A highlight of the trip (apart from the wedding of course) was when the bridesmaid and her husband took us out on the town.  We ended up at a jazz bar at about 4 in the morning. The place was almost empty apart from the bar staff and 4 musicians.  The 4 guys were having a great time.  They weren't really playing for us, they were having a jam session for themselves    I am not keen on jazz and have no idea what they played, but it was exquisite and the memory of that session is a very happy one.
