ScottishPower owner Iberdrola is to create 200 jobs at a wind power base in Glasgow.
The green energy arm of the Spanish company has established its global
headquarters for offshore wind development in the city. The division will be
headed by Keith Anderson, director of ScottishPower Renewables, and will
oversee Iberdrola’s offshore wind farm developments worldwide.
The latest move is part of the company’s plan to consolidate itself as the
world’s leading producer of electricity from clean technologies, such as wind
energy. The company plans to recruit more than 200 staff, mainly in engineering,
within the next six years. The firm’s offshore wind division currently employs
20 people.
Iberdrola Renovables said the new division would develop a “major portfolio
of offshore wind projects”.
The new division will be incorporated into ScottishPower Renewables, the UK
business unit of Iberdrola Renovables that in 2008 and 2009 built more than 140
turbines at Whitelee windfarm, near Glasgow.
A spokesman for the company said: “There are already about 20 people
working for the division in Scotland now, but the number will be scaled up
as projects mature over the next five or six years. These will be high-end
engineering jobs.”
Last week Iberdrola announced plans to create 100 high-end engineering
jobs when Iberdrola Engineering and Construction shifts to Scotland from
Spain later this year. Between 2010 and 2012, Iberdrola said it expects to
invest €9billion (£8.17bn) in renewables generation to accelerate its international
expansion and consolidate its position as world leader in wind energy.
The company said it will invest €4.9bn in the US, €1.9bn in the UK, €1bn in
Spain and €1.2bn in the rest of the world.

Scotland will become "the Saudi Arabia" of marine energy with the launch of
new green generators powered by the waves and tides, the nation's First
Minister has said.
Hundreds of energy devices will be installed off the north coast of Scotland
and the waters around Orkney, powering up to 700,000 homes. The projects
will generate four times the amount of energy as Dounreay power station did
at its peak.
First Minister Alex Salmond has revealed the organisations selected to run the
projects and declared: "Scotland rules the waves."
The landmark announcement paves the way for the first marine renewable
development schemes in the UK. The Crown Estate, which owns the UK seabed,
has handed out 10 leases to the successful companies which will install the
energy devices.
Rob Hastings, director of the Crown Estate, said: "The 1.2 gigawatts of marine
renewable generation capacity from these sites by 2020 will generate four times
the electricity of Dounreay power station in its heyday. This shows the world
that marine energy can produce significant electrical power and offer a real
alternative to conventional power production."
Mr Salmond said the waters around the north of the country were "the Saudi
Arabia of marine power".
"Today marks a major milestone in the global journey towards a low carbon
future," he said. "The wave and tidal projects... underline the rich natural resources
of the waters of Scotland."
The leasing agreements are the largest in this sector anywhere in the world.
Green MSP Patrick Harvie said: "Scotland has hit the energy jackpot twice, first
with North Sea oil and now with renewables like wave and tidal."
The Ministry of Defence said in 2008 that wind farms around Britain's coast
could pose a security threat to the country, as giant turbines create blind spots
in early-warning systems.

Community groups in East Renfrewshire are to benefit from a fund set up from
the development of a massive wind farm in the area.
ScottishPower Renewables runs Europe's largest onshore wind farm at Whitelee
near Eaglesham. When planning permission was granted a special fund was set
up to support the surrounding communities.
The fund will deliver about £140,000 a year for the next 25 years to East Renfrewshire
Council for local groups. East Renfrewshire councillor Alistair Carmichael, chair of the
Whitelee Wind farm fund panel, said: "Though the fund is available across East
Renfrewshire, projects from the areas closest to the wind farm, in Eaglesham
and Waterfoot, will be given priority.
"Projects that could receive support should show a benefit to the community and
could include sustainable energy initiatives, environmental improvements, community
events, infrastructure improvements, tourism and leisure activities."
The Whitelee wind farm currently has 140 turbines, and approval has been granted
for a further 39 turbines.
